Message, Audience and Hook: The Starting Point to Successfully Market Your Book

*Today I’m sharing a special guest post from Claudine Wolk, radio host, podcaster, author, voice actor, and book marketer.

If you are a new author or even just thinking about writing a book, you most likely know by now that you are expected to market your own book.

This article will cover how to start book marketing.

Book Marketing Basics

Book marketing is simply a list of things you need to do as an author to get your book seen and sold.

There are three things that you need to identify that will permeate ALL of your book marketing tasks.  If you take the time to identify the three items below, you will be able to successfully and effectively market your book.

The three items are Message, Audience, and Hook.

Message

Identify your message. What are the possible messages in your book? What do you hope to teach? What is your goal in sharing your message? Why is your message important? Why do you feel the overwhelming desire to share this message? Keep a list of possible messages that your book conveys as you write and start your book marketing.

Audience

Who will buy this book? Who will like this book? Who is this book meant for? Who needs your message? Jot down who you think will buy this book, like this book, and talk about this book. Write down every crazy kind of characteristic you can think of about your imaginary audience.  Where do they shop?  What do they read?  What do they eat?  What do they watch on TV? Every detail you can possibly imagine could be the focus of your marketing down the road.

Hook

A “hook” is a scintillating aspect to your book, or YOU, or YOUR STORY, that is so compelling and unique that others will WANT to tell your story.  A hook is NEVER – Author writes book – unless of course you are Tina Turner!  A hook is something special, something fun and unique.

Let’s say you wrote a cookbook.  You only cooked with organic vegetables. Ok, we are getting somewhere – the cookbook is a little more unique.  You also only cooked with vegetables that started with the letter K. A little more “hooky” if you will.  Now let’s say that Tom Cruise got in touch with you and insisted his chef cook with your organic, K- named vegetables and he has never felt better in his whole life!  Are you getting an idea of what a hook is?

Take the time to Identify the message, the audience, and the hook of your book. it is your first step in book marketing and will help you focus, strategize, and create all of your future marketing and promotion to get your book seen and sold.
