My Review
I thoroughly enjoyed Jamie Nash’s humour and writing style. There are enough examples of TV story structure provided in this book that you will find a show you’ve watched. If not, you can always watch one of the shows Jamie has evaluated using the Save the Cat! Structure. I found reading about shows I’ve watched definitely helped me understand the structure better.
The book had a strong focus on pilots which made sense since you’ll need an excellent pilot if you’re going to create a TV show people want to watch. Jamie says the pilot is one of the hardest thing to write. After reading his book, you will have a lot easier time, I’m sure.
Not only were the chapters easy to read and understand with clear examples, but the exercises at the end of each chapter were practical and totally doable. Jamie did an excellent job of breaking things down step-by-step so you don’t overwhelmed.
There is also a “Check Yourself” section at the end of the chapters that serves as a great reminder of what you’re working towards. You’ll want to read these questions to make sure you are creating something new and exciting.
Jamie also provides some tough love in the book which is important. “What you’re doing might not pay off for years. So ya gotta keep at it.” As writers, we sometimes get this idea that we’ll hit a homerun our first time at bat, and it just doesn’t happen that way. Keep writing. Keep learning. This book can help!
I recommend Save the Cat! Writes for TV for any writer wanting to learn more about screenwriting as well as writers wanting to create engaging story structure. I gave this book five out of five stars on Amazon and Goodreads. A definite must read!
